I’m coming to the enigmatic heights of Armenia

“I am coming to the enigmatic heights of Armenia as a fellow brother in pursuit of seeing your faces, praying with you and sharing the gift of friendship” Pope Francis.

The head of the largest Christian Church – the Roman Catholic Church Pope Francis paid a visit to the world’s oldest Christian nation and one of the most devout Christian societies on earth.

His Holiness Pope Francis visited the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin, where a welcoming service was offered in the Mother Cathedral. He also visited Tsitsernakaberd, the Armenian Genocide Memorial Complex and Museum in Yerevan. During his trip the Pope traveled to Gyumri – one of historical towns of Armenia where centuries-old Armenian Christian values have flourished. Pope visited the “Yot Verk” apostolic cathedral of Gyumri and Armenian Catholic cathedral of Gyumri (dedicated to the Holy Martyrs).

As a part of his historic trip to Armenia, Pope Francis held an Ecumenical Encounter and Prayer for Peace in Yerevan’s Republic Square.

The monastery of Khor Virap (deep well) was the final leg of Pope Francis’ apostolic trip in Armenia. It is one of the most sacred places for the Armenian Church, located near the Turkish border, at the foot of Mount Ararat.  Khor Virap’s notability as a monastery and pilgrimage site is attributed to the fact that Gregory the Illuminator was initially imprisoned here, who later spread the religion among Armenian people.

The Pope and the Catholicos released two doves in the direction of Mount Ararat as a symbol of peace.
